Teaching and courses

A more complete list of syllabi over the years is posted in academia.edu, but below are some representative more recent examples with additional description. In some classes I used a medium.com site to showcase student work. Making writing public seems consistent with the spirit of journalism in general, and I hope it motivates students to take their writing seriously knowing I'll not be the only one to read it. Undergraduate

Signature offerings:

Signature courses are offered to all freshmen campus-wide on variety of faculty-proposed topics. The first one I ventured was "Understanding 9/11" on the tenth anniversary of the attack in 2001, examining it through a journalistic lens and offered in a seminar format.

The second signature course I developed (in a large lecture format) dealt with themes of media literacy within a context of civic engagement: "News literacy: A citizen's guide."

Plan 2 honors seminar

Plan 2 is a highly selective university-wide honors program, and I proposed a course on the "Politics of conspiracy theories." This followed my interest in more recent years to take a case study approach to media studies, rather than the more conventional media-centric approach.
